CANDYMAN

Candyman...Candyman...Candyman...Candyman. Not gonna say it again. I'm not looking in a mirror though so I should be fine.

Directed by Nia DaCosta, this brand new horror movie- sequel of an older 1992 film by the same name- might be the movie for you if you're a horror fan. I myself have never delved very deep into the world of the horror genre, but I'd like to watch many more after this one. The legend of the Candyman is the scary story that friends tell each other at sleepovers, about a killer with a hook for a hand, giving kids candies stuffed with razor blades. They say if you say his name five times while looking in a mirror he will appear and kill you. Yet what if this story was not just a story? What if the Candyman is real? Anthony, an artist researching for inspiration begins down the rabbit hole, slowly uncovering disturbing truths and heading down a path to insanity and violence.

Perhaps not the scariest of scary movies ever made, but this one was especially well made. Less about the jump scares, and more about the slow build up of tenseness and mystery.  Beautifully shot and acted, the mystery built-up through the entire film, and eventually hitting that major twist that ties everything together. However what made this one special were the subtle layers throughout. A horror movie on the surface, yet also a very well done commentary on social issues, primarily racism. Overall, a masterfully crafted movie, made by people who surely were passionate about the project.

Absolutely worth your precious time, even for non horror lovers. I say give it a try. Best experienced in a dark room late at night with a mirror next to you.

  1. This movie is really good. I went and watched this in theaters. This movie was suppose to be really scary but was not to be honest. I loved the plot though. I stayed very interested all through out the movie. Not going to lie I though about saying candy man 5 times in the mirror but I did not want to die.

  2. Based on the first movie I would think the sequel would be thrilling. Candyman 2 was a little different from what I expected. I saw it this weekend. I loved the plot though and how things panned out. The saying is if you say candy man 5 times in the mirror, then he'll come and kill you.
