CRY MACHO
At 91 years of age, somehow, the man is still acting and directing movies. With "Cry Macho" Clint Eastwood continues to prove that he is still capable of telling stories. The movie itself stars Mr. Eastwood as Mike, a retired rodeo star who fell into alcoholism after a brutal accident. Many years later, Mike's old boss, who helped Mike during the tough times, asks him for a favor. To drive to Mexico and bring back his son to the United States.
With surprising willingness to embark on the favor, Mike immediately heads off to Mexico to find the boy. Rafa, played by Eduardo Minett, has gotten himself into trouble in the Mexican streets. For the remainder of the runtime, Mike and Rafa drive back up north through Mexico and begin to form a wholesome friendship. They are challenged by the authorities, and local gangs, and slowly begin to determine what it means to be "Macho".
If you're not a historical fan of the Clint Eastwood filmography, you may have a hard time staying engaged throughout this one. Questionable acting from supporting characters, and a slow-paced storyline make this one a bit of a slug to be completely honest. There are, however, some redeeming aspects. Most of this is due to the character Mike. Clint Eastwood is, even at 91, a very reliable actor to lead a movie. There's also one of the best animal characters in a movie I've seen in a bit, Rafa's pet Rooster "Macho". It's not the kind of movie you'll find glorious excitement in, as it's more of a movie on life, centering around two characters of old and new generations, slowly beginning to find their purpose I suppose.
If you're in the mood for some retired cowboy rodeo drama, this might be for you, but even if you are in the mood for some retired cowboy rodeo drama, this also might not be for you. So, is it worth your precious time? I would say for most people, likely not. However, Cry Macho still manages to entertain if you give it a piece of mind.
