DUNE

Based on the 1965 Novel by the same name, Dune is a Sci-Fi epic about an interstellar society and the spark of a political war among the houses that govern different planets. The protagonist is Paul, a son of one of these family monarchies. They are put in the responsibility to run the mining planet known as Arrakis, however, when an opposing house threat rises, war breaks out.

This movie is so complicated, and so I struggled to write that little synopsis above. There is so much lore and backstory in the book that many people thought it was impossible to adapt to the big screen. But director Denis Villeneuve managed to make something pretty special. A true big-screen cinematic experience. Never in my life have I been so mesmerized by what I was seeing on screen. The visuals and sound bring you a serious otherworldly experience. There have been many movies set in post-apocalyptical or space settings, yet this one by far accomplishes that feeling of realism or immersion.

The movie might be a little different than what they were expecting. It's not a quick-moving pew pew adventure movie you'll have a fun time watching. You'll have fun, just differently. It's actually pretty slow-moving, and might even bore some people for a while. But I cannot see someone leaving this movie without appreciating it. Minor spoilers here, but it also doesn't really have an ending. Just as the major conflict is about to kick off, the movie ends. It's because this is only the first half of the book. We'll need to wait a couple of years for Part 2.

But they were smart to split it up, the movie takes its time and would've felt too rushed otherwise. Overall, one of my favorite movies of the year and maybe all-time. Absolutely worth your precious time, except don't watch it at home. Go to see this on the biggest screen you possibly can.

  1. I love this! It is so hard to make the movie live up to the book, I definitely enjoy the books over the movies, but this seems very interesting. This normally is not my go-to genre of movie, but reading this review makes me want to go ahead and watch Dune. I will definitely keep looking at your blog for movie reviews and updates! Great job :)
