ETERNALS
Another new Marvel movie has entered the chat. Directed by 2020's Academy Award Winner for both Best Picture and Best Director, Chloe Zhao, this large scale movie follows a team of ancient immortal guardians of Earth as they re-unite in the modern day to realize what their true purpose was, and to face off against resurging evil.
When the trailers came out for this movie I was expecting it to be phenomenal, especially by knowing who was behind the camera. So after finding out it was the lowest reviewed MCU movie of all time, I was shocked. However upon viewing, it's definitely visible that Zhao struggled a bit with the sheer scale and scope of this story. Which is certainly a switch from her award winning movie Nomadland. That's not to say this movie wasn't entertaining, it certainly was. It was a treat to look at, as expected the skill with the visuals were incredible. So many shots that looked so gorgeous and managed to really get a sense for the scale.
But with such a large cast of characters, being able to attach to them was a bit difficult, as many were forced to become sidelined by the end. Effectively reducing them to appear as these larger than life, soulless figures at times. Unaffected by real human issues that audiences can related to. Minding all the issues around the story, I think it still did a really good job. I especially liked the way they handled the character of Ikaris, probably one of my favorite interpretations of a Superman like godly character. You could really feel how powerful he was.
Overall a fun time and definitely not a bore, but it does fumble in some areas. Still worth your precious time though, if not only for the cool post credit scenes.
