The heavily delayed follow up to Baby Driver in heavily praised writer/director Edgar Wright's filmography comes this super sleek horror drama starring Thomasin Mackenzie and Anya-Taylor Joy. The movie follows a young college student as she heads off to her dream fashion school in London, where she quickly learns it's not quite the city of her fantasy.
Leaning on themes of nostalgia, we watch as she suddenly begins finding herself in 1960's London in some sort of lucid dream to escape from her frustrating reality. However when she begins to make connections to real-life she starts wondering if the dream isn't a dream at all. This movie flips itself on it's head not once, but twice. Going from a teen drama to a mystery and then a shocking burst of horror at the end.
What a ride this movie was. Extremely clever directing and writing maintain a fast paced edge-of-your seat momentum that doesn't let off until the end. Horror/mystery fans will die for this one. I can't say much for negatives about this movie, some of the "scary" scenes overstay their welcome and fail to present real stakes, but the movie doesn't falter beyond that. Perhaps a horror on the surface but also a movie carrying very important themes about women in society. So many clues and false leads laid in front of you that all come together at the end for a truly fantastic twist that raises it to new heights.
Worth your precious time? Yes, but be prepared for a little bit of frights.
